Goofy, playful psych-pop for a good time! After taking some wild artistic wanderings through black metal, reggae, and dance, Rafter is back with a “roots” album if you can call it that. Rafter doing what Rafter does best: super-catchy, kaleidoscopic bedroom pop. Full of youthful instrumentation, foot-stomping choruses, and kooky horn sections, the album is a playful jaunt through the childhood you wish you had. The lyrics dwell on some angsty loneliness, but generally fun record!
Genre: Playground pop
RIYL: Animal Collective, Passion Pit, Santigold, the Beatles after Acid
Favorite Tracks: 2, 3, 9 (but worth playing most tracks!)
I’ve Done the Strangest Things (3:18) - Freak Folk, looping weird vocals, harmonica, organ!
Lonely World (3:24)* - interesting textures, thumping, horns come in at 2:00, funky drums, soft crooning
You Are the Last of Your Kind (4:34)* - Anthemic, thumping intro, awesome percussion
Lifelike (3:40) - Rattling, reverberating percussion, sultry vocals, slower cooler
Oblivion (3:51) - More Beatles inspired, trippy chorus, less poppy, more psych
The Things I’ve Learned from Reggae (3:39 ) - Slower, very spacey, Suess-esque playfulness
When I Die I wanna Get Some of My Blood on Them (4:45) - Dancy, big horns at 2:30
Rafter vs. Maimai (4:03) - Woozy piano intro, soft space craft landing, slow, dreamy
We Could Be Monsters (3:44) - *Funky! Wow, strong song, cool synthesizer
Weird Animal (3:46) - Love this beat, slow burning ballad almost
