Album Review
Be Sharp
Reviewed 2017-03-20

Impressive debut by piano prodigy and composer, Matthew Whitaker. At 15 years old, Whitaker has already performed at the Apollo theater, Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, etc. The set here includes 7 originals and 3 covers. Rhythm section sometimes includes notables Will Calhoun on drums and Christian McBride on bass.

No FCC issues.

1 Fast. Retro big-band swing-era style. Showy piano punctuated by horns. (2:51)
2 ** Slow solo intro. Then mid-tempo, bouncy & cheery with bass & drums ‘comp. (6:38)
3 Mid-tempo. Easy going, improvisational. With elec guitar & bass, Latin perc. (4:57)
4 * Fast. Lively salsa number with horns. Good if you like Latin jazz. (4:14)
5 * Mid-fast. Oft recorded jazz standard. Good alto vocalist. Nice piano bridge. (4:50)
6 Slow. Pretty love song. Just piano, bass, drums. McBride has a nice solo. (7:57)
7 * Mid-tempo. Happy, funky soul jazz number with plenty of horns. (5:01)
8 Slow. Whitaker plays organ on this bluesy Lonnie Smith tune. Featured solos by tenor sax, electric guitar, then organ. (10:07)
9 Mid-tempo. Small combo is just organ, elec guitar, drums. (4:11)
10 ** Mid-tempo, graceful, pleasant. Good solos on elec guitar & trombone. (7:05)
