He’s celebrating his 81st birthday by proving his piano technique is as young and fresh as always. But while his technique is young, his playing shows his decades of not just playing but feeling the blues. Mostly solo but a few with friends and three amazing historical recordings featuring the late great Mama Yancey. Ends with a fascinating 15-minute interview about his mentors and inspirations.
*1. Rich, old-time slow piano. Solo & almost sleepy. So good.
*2. Quirky striding boogie, with a nice, classic stomp.
3. The classic with a dramatic stride and sense of melancholy.
*4. Ballad w/subtle sax & great vocals by Katherine Davis. Mmm
5. Downtempo, then picks up. Playful take on an old chestnut.
6. Mid/upbeat stomp w/more great female vocals & a jazz flair.
7. Downbeat but relaxed and light.
*8. Ooooh…down & dirty vocals, like a great martini.
*9. Playful boogie, fun and delicious.
10. Slow old-time gospel-tinged blues.
