CONTEMPORARY LATIN JAZZ COMBO
Smith teaches at Tufts University and has led the Tufts Big Band on tours of Europe and Cuba. The line up here is alto and tenor saxophones, two trombones, bass, drums, and Smith’s piano. Most tracks have a strong Afro-Cuban influence (but not so much Nos 3, 4, 7). Smith composed all tracks, except #2 (by Dizzy Gillespie) and #8 (Wayne Shorter).
No FCC issues.
1 ** Fast. Bright & lively. Leads by alto, tenor, piano. Plenty of Latin perc. (8:00)
2 ** Fast. Energetic salsa beat. Danceable. Solos by trombone & both saxes. (5:32)
3 Slow solo piano intro. At 1:40, becomes mid-fast; bass & drums join. (7:31)
4 Mid-fast. Snappy. Mostly piano, bass & drums, though horns punctuate in spots. (6:17)
5 * Fast. Cuban sound again. High energy. Exuberant tenor sax & trombone. (7:14)
6 Mid-fast; very fast; mid. Juxtaposed styles. Middle section very lively, Cuban. (5:08)
7 * Slow & peaceful. Solo piano. Pretty but played a bit too forte. (4:56)
8 Mid-fast. Partied-up remake of the tune. Strong Caribbean flavor with lots of Latin perc. Solos by saxes, trombone, piano. (6:32)
9 Mid-fast. Latin. Strong ensemble playing. Lengthy piano solo. Trombone solo. (7:26)
