AVA NT-GARDE JAZZ PIANO

Representing two generations, the vastly prolific Matthew Shipp (age 56), on piano, teams up here with drummer Bobby Kapp (age 74). Not merely piano with drum accompaniment, the pieces here are much more like duets, truly collaborative.

All instrumental. No FCC issues.

1 ** Fast. Free improv. Varied & interesting. Jagged piano. Dense drumming. (8:32)
2 * Mid-tempo. A bit more melodic. Rhythmic & bouncy. (4:27)
3 Mid-tempo. Drums start. Dramatic piano entry. Alternating pounding & skipping. (5:52)
4 ** Mid-tempo. Drum solo (for 1:30). Ominous piano evolves into light-hearted. (6:11)
5 Very slow at first. Tense, anxious, abstract. Gains tempo. Cymbals for last minute. (5:32)
6 * Slow. Drums start. Piano takes over. At times melodic & emotive. Accessable. (8:09)
7 * Varied tempo; slow to very fast. Rhythmic ideas thrown together, superimposed. (10:50)
8 Mid-tempo. Fortissimo pounding. Machine gun drumming. Very tough going. (5:42)
9 Very slow, eerie start. Plodding. Gains some steam but loses it again. (6:08)
