Album Review
Reviewed 2017-04-06
The Molochs/America’s Velvet Glory. Indie rock constructed from a patchwork of influences—namely in 60s garage and psychedelic rock, as well as proto-punk. Deadpan vocal delivery with a melancholic sense of detachment (somewhat reminiscent of Lou Reed) are laid upon jangly guitar riffs, bright and at times haunting organ melodies as well as blues-y harmonica. Easily listenable all the way through, and appealing to a wide range of tastes as they mix and match elements of disparate genres of decades past in a catchy indie rock package. RIYL: Velvet Underground, Violent Femmes, Jonathan Richman, Pavement, Foxygen, Patti Smith, The Byrds. FCC: clean

1.) (2:05) uptempo; energetic organ (solo @ :46)* lead & vocal register 2.) (3:15) Thumping drums, bright and jangly guitar riff; world-weary lyrics/vocal delivery.* 3) (3:38) ethereal organ melody; head-nodder. 4) (2:49) Bluesy intro; drawn out vocals. 5) (2:20) uptempo; more upbeat in terms of vocal delivery; nice guitar solo @1:10. 6) (3:04) Dreamy and psychedelic; sparse percussion. 7) (2:59) High-energy w/ driving jangle guitar and harmonica interspersed; most danceable track.* 8) (3:09) Ethereal organ lead w/ catchy guitar riff; more emotional and upbeat vox; smooth instrumental section @1:30. 9) (3:28) possible lyrical homage to Lou Reed-description of urban atmosphere and energy; a few tempo changes. 10) (3:20) Catchy guitar riff & lazy bassline; emotionally detached vox/lyrics.* 11) (3:18) dreamy organ melody; bluesy guitar riffs interspersed.
