JULIA HÜLSMANN TRIO: Sooner and Later ECM, 2017 MODERN JAZZ – The early pieces on this album start in a weightless, drifting space, usually with solo piano, then coalesce into beautiful, delicate structures like snowflakes. Later tunes have more drive. In both contexts, German pianist Hülsmann and her trio show off a wonderfully balanced, organic ebb and flow. A solid release. Fo’s Picks: 1, 5, 6, 8, 9 1. 3:44 – gentle, frosty beauty: simple melody, expressive embellishments 2. 4:59 – slow solo intro; trio moves from spare openness to serene flow 3. 4:25 – minimalist intro, gentle mid/uptempo trio, a soulful nostalgic touch 4. 4:07 – soft ballad with slightly exotic melody, center drifts around the trio 5. 4:24 – relaxed Radiohead cover: from a distance, intimate, then propulsive 6. 5:04 – drum patter sets up a quiet, relaxed stroll; gets knotty in the middle 7. 4:33 – hushed ballad, piano approaches from off-center, complexity rises 8. 4:13 – upbeat tune skips, strolls, and tumbles along in a playful romp 9. 3:59 – uptempo, almost funky bass pulse: piano ducks & weaves 10. 4:28 – midtempo: rhythm sets up straight lines, soloists slide around them 11. 5:37 – deliberate intro, then highwire trio over uptempo ticking drums [ Fo ] - 6 April 2017 | ||
