jungle / idm / breakbeat Grimy, gritty, post-jungle workouts, with occasional breathers. Intricate, well-crafted, restrained. But more importantly: rude, dark, fun. This EP uses all of its change-ups and glitchy detail to keep you locked in its nervy but infectious groove. Has a pleasantly casual trippiness to it, to top it all off. RIYL: Rbchmbrs, Aphex Twin, Squarepusher, Ramadanman/Pearson Sound, Vai, Shackleton no FCCs 1. acid-y aphex-y bassline, skittish. fidgety propulsive drums, occasional vocals courtesy of a demented speak and spell. pads in the latter half, bass and percussion pull for a bit, mutating and slipping back in and out. nice glitchy whirlpools in the percussion throughout. hard to pin very slight electro vibe too? 6:10 2. swaying slightly foreboding ambient pads rising. occasional thunder, bass rumbles slowly roll in later. jungle drums crash in, figured it might actually be an ambient number, but the percussion is not unwelcome at all. punchy bassline comes to the fore when drums first recede. low end is heavy, percussion is crisp, but the programming is nicely restrained. 5:54 3. ah, this one's the ambient one. nice slightly fuzzed/staticky clouds of bass roll in and out, sheets of high end pads dissolving through occasionally. 3:30 4. super slippery, super punchy. swirling jungle drums spar with bass blurts, constantly subtly morphing, stumbling all over the place but never falling. quick satisfying vocal sample in the middle. occasional pads and echo and ambience, but makes a lot with a really austere palette. slowly strips down and evaporates to leave. 5:52 5. pleasant almost-ambient comedown track (has very occasional percussive stomps). sounds like smeared hazy vocals and strings and maybe horns, all texture, a bit rumbly in the background, rather forlorn. 2:41 6. a brighter version of #2, drums are more immediate than the original, though it's still a slow burner by most standards. 5:40 recommended: 2, 4, 3, 1, 5, 6, any |
