BILL FRISELL & THOMAS MORGAN: Small Town
ECM, 2017

MODERN JAZZ – Here's a friendly set of guitar/bass duets, recorded live at the Village Vanguard in NYC. Has all the dreamy, floating, folksy charm one expects from Frisell, along with a few tributes (such as #2, chosen on the spot because sax legend Lee Konitz was in the audience). Morgan’s bass gives the tunes some body and weight.

All excellent. Fo’s Picks: 2, 4, 5, 6, 8

1. 11:05 – slow, spare, haunting: simple melody rises gradually from ethereal musings, plus a few brief rhythmic patterns (Paul Motian tune)
2. 7:31 – midtempo stroll: a Lee Konitz bebop classic, stripped to its essence
3. 9:35 – slow & dreamy, for drummer Andrew Cyrille: guitar sings gently
4. 5:09 – relaxed folk song, with a lazy summer-day country flavor
5. 8:58 – relaxed road song with a western touch, stretches out over time
6. 6:41 – midtempo bounce: Fats Domino tune with a folk-blues feel
7. 12:05 – gentle, like a tone poem, but much more melodic in the middle; fine interplay between guitar & bass throughout, bass solo near the end
8. 7:01 – relaxed: theme from "Goldfinger" has an air of exotic mystery
