An Australian institution, The Necks are back with yet another epic improvisational release. Experimental sounds combining the jazzy & the ambient, with a slice of psychedelia thrown in for good measure. Never an easy band to pigeonhole.
An avant-garde feast, brought to us by Stephen O’Malley’s record label.

Like: Oren Ambachi, Antti Tolvi

A real quality release. 1 & 2 in particular (All have long quiet fades)
No FCC’s (Instrumentals)

1) Blue Mountain (20.59) A slow shimmering opening mixing percussion & piano. Like an ensuing storm you feel the tension building in waves – it takes time – A truly majestic journey.
2) Overhear (16.18) Louder with more Steve Reich-esque organ play on display, not as repetitive as the master – although just as captivating.
3) Rise (15.34) Quieter tones that give a more intense experience. Piano takes prominence as in the opening track. Loud-ish finale.
4) Timepiece (21.48) Sci-fi in your face start, with watery textures in the background. Has more of that traditional improv feel about it. Gathers momentum in the 2nd part & continues until the conclusion.
