Dreamy tech-house. Welsh producer and vocalist, Kelly Lee Owens fills her killer first record with a surprising combination of techno and dream pop. Breathy vocals float over a diverse range of thoughtful beats. Most of these songs have many movements often flipping the initial beat on its head. A great first record and a sign of even better things to come. Genre: So there’s this whole thing with soft female vocals over deep sub-bass, you’ve heard it before, but you haven’t heard it like this RIYL: Laurel Halo, Jenny Hval, Empress Of, Holly Herndon Favorite Tracks: 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 FCCs? Nah S.O (3:13) - Slow, breathy intro, atmospheric tabla, sweet female Vox over pads and tabla Arthur (4:05) - Slow, but with a strong sense of momentum, rain, bird calls, reverberating female Vox, rhythmically pulsing, strong bass line Anxi (3:47) ** - So good, wow, spoken Jenny Hval feature mixes with lofty vocals, washes into a swirling pool of beats Lucid (3:33) * - Random synth pop jam? Hell yes! Lush and upbeat Evolution (4:03) * - Techno head-bopper, extremely bare compared to Lucid, cool bass lines, turn it up if you can, irresistibly danceable Bird (5:15) * - Bouncy bells with some floating synths overhead, in anticipation of a sick kick at 1:45, great, mind-bending bass line Throwing Lines (3:07) ** - Nice! Clear vocals, more poppy, dreamy Cbm (5:00) - interesting syncopation, reverberation, long outro Keep Walking (4:43) - Some late massive-attack-esque trip hop, soaring vocals with tense “bee” sounds 8 (9:39) - Eastern-sounding synths, mysterious Vox in distance, long outro |
