Review: unparalleled guitar interplay, much of it high decibel, on this loving tribute by many of Rypdal's contemporaries & admirers for his 70th birthday. Henry Kaiser pulled the whole thing together. Bill Frisell on track #1 is the exception. It's nice to have friends!
If You Like: Robert Fripp, Fred Frith, Frank Zappa, Steve Vai, David Gilmour, Henry Kaiser
Track Review (favorites denoted by *): 1/ Ornen (5:53) - gorgeous solo> slow & contemplative> slow fade *2/ Over Birkerot/ Silver Bird Heads For The Sun (14:52) - space jam to start> uptempo, loud, & jagged> shifts to slow, spacey, & ominous> builds to a frenzy, then settles into a midtempo space jam> crescendo end *3/ Chaser (6:17) - wild modular sounds, loud & insistent meld into space jam> uptempo rock out> hi decibel smoking guitar solo> stratospheric rock> spacey fade out *4/ What Comes After (6:31) - slow, heavy chords morph into long sliding notes like meditating on acid> builds into a midtempo jam with a Middle Eastern feel> fade 5/ Warning; Electric Guitars (5:18) - bass starts> midtempo freak out jam> quick stop 6/ Tough enough/ Rolling Stone/ Tough Enough (19:15) - rock chord opens, quickly descends into lovely midtempo multilayered avant garde space trip> segues into pleasant, quiet, slow space stroll> heavy chording swings into new midtempo heavy fretting space jam> segues into brief slow tempo floating jam then swings into full tilt rocking jam> melody shift to chord driven uptempo jam> quick stop *7/ Avskjed (6:58) - bells start with oriental feel> stuttering midtempo jam including backward tapes> segues into slow tempo solo> slow fade *8/ Dream Song/ Into The Wilderness/ Out Of This World (6:05) - bass starts> quiet & slow spacey jam> melody shift (but still spacey & slow) early Pink Floyd-like> slow fade 9/ Sunrise (8:47) - bass/drums start> midtempo sliding spacey jam> slides up a notch & builds in intensity> segues into a wild space jam, then out into the universe> quick stop
