AJ Hobbes, “Too Much is Never Enough”
Reviewed by Kim Walter
Debut album from outlaw storyteller. Inspired by Texas music, R&B, and gospel, this album begins with a generic country rock sound, but, like so many albums, gets better as it evolves. I find the country genre incredibly diverse
as to all the possible influences and sounds that are possible, so I tend to find standard country rock, well, tedious at times. That being said, I know there are millions of fans worldwide, so there is obviously a place and validity to it. I’ll admit that I also have a sweet spot in my heart for old-time cowboys and their music. Here, AJ does a nice job of offering up some more mainstream sounding stuff ( 1, 7, 10, 11) and mixing in some funk and gospel and even a little electric swing (3, 5, 8) . Best for me: 3, 4, 8 and 11
1. Med - 2:31 Pretty standard country rock fare.
2. Slow/Med - 4:06 More variation, emotion, like country with a funk groove
3. Slow - 2:40 Funky. Described as “outlaw stomp”
4. Slow - 3:33 “Horn” laden version of Merle haggard’s Classic
5. Med - 3:44 Country gospel jam
6. Slow/Med - 5:06 Gospel voice and organ dominant ballad
7. Slow/Med - 4:16 Country rock/honky
8. Med - 3:31 Peppy tune with an electric swing feel
9. Slow - 3:50 Eagles inspired style- country/folk rock
10. Med - 3:29 Duet with Dominique Pruitt, country rock
11. Slow - 2:37 Classic country sound for Waylon and Merle
12. Slow - 4:46 Tale of life on the road
