Album Review
Margy Kahn
Reviewed 2018-01-10
A quartet of skilled musicians put together this fun and quirky album; strong percussion and accessible lyrics by English singer and composer Steve Marshall, who has worked with Lee “Scratch” Perry, Keith Richards, and George Clinton; lovely jazz flute by well-known South African Wouter Kellerman; percussionist and vocalist David Klassen and Ratshepe “Phresh” Makhene singer-songwriter, bass player and percussionist, both from South Africa, round out the foursome; very listenable and at times danceable;

NO FCC's; Favorite tracks: 4, 6, 7, 8, 10, 12

1-Win Win Situation – 2:45 – catchy Caribbean style vocal accompanied by equally interesting flute and guitar parts

2-Coming Home, Speak Soon 4:16 – rock vamp backing vocals, nice harmony, bass, flute

3-Perfect Strangers 4:49 – slower, more laid-back beat and lyrics; percussion takes over

*4-Crossing South Africa 6:36 – pretty instrumental goes in and out of major and minor; rhythmically mesmerizing with lots of texture

5-Colours 4:23 – vocal with a beat, backed by guitar and drums; verse in English; chorus in African language

*6-Buya Ekhaya-3:28-- mixture of African language and English; syncopated beat; catchy; layered

*7-At the Harbour-- 6:26 --interesting sounds to begin (vocal percussion?); intriguing layers pile on top of insistent rhythms; flute comes to the fore; lots of breath; percussion wins out and fades

*8-Mam Gobhozi-- 3:38 --flute and bass alternate with African language lyrics backed by drums; catchy!

9- Jo’burg – 4:26 -- flute riffs over bass vamp with drumbeat

*10-I Love You –3:55-- sweetly tuneful with heartfelt lyrics punctuated by the flute

11-Talkin' 'Bout Love—3:29 – anthem about the triumph of love in the face of adversity

*12-Keep Moving 5:24 – flute over syncopated rhythm starts off; chorus comes in with words

13-Dreamcloud--:52-- outtro with some kind of outer space flute work
