ALT COUNTRY Gosh, this is a good record! It’s the debut album of singer-songwriter Vivian Leva, out of Lexington, VA. Leva’s wonderful voice mixes the prettiness of Sarah Jarosz, the tradition of Gillian Welch and the storytelling kick of Kitty Wells. It’s just a little but not too girlish. Her talented collaborator, Riley Calcagno (he), plays guitar, fiddle, banjo, & mandolin, and provides much of the harmony singing as well. Most songs (not #6, #8) were written by Leva, and they’re all good. The lyrics are printed inside the cover. No FCC issues. 1 ** Mid-slow. Honky-tonk throwback: drowning her sorrows. Guitar, pedal, fiddle. (3:33) 2 ** Mid-slow. A touching song about breaking up. Guitar, pedal steel, drums. (3:05 3 ** Slow. Sad, broken-hearted ballad following a divorce. Mandolin, pedal steel. (4:02) 4 * Mid-fast. Old-time country jig. Fiddle & banjo. Very traditional sound. (3:55) 5 Slow. Sad, folk ballad. Reminiscing on lost love. Strummed acoustic guitar, banjo. (4:49) 6 * Mid-fast. Traditional Appalachian style ballad. Rhythm guitar, picked banjo. (3:14) 7 Mid-slow. Another honky-tonk tearjerker. Guitars, pedal, fiddle. Very retro. (3:30) 8 Slow. Tragic Paul Burch song about the end of the family line. Elec guitar, fiddle. (4:22) 9 * Very slow & somber. About sad goodbyes. Two plucked fiddles. Very pretty. (3:44) 10 * Slow, pretty love song. Just piano accompaniment. Multiple-part harmony. (4:56) |
