Album Review
Your Imaginary Friend
Reviewed 2018-08-08
Local SF band, composed of Cubby Creatures, Thee More Shallows, The Druggles members - from their bandcamp: “REPTIEL is a psychedelic indie prog rock band from San Francisco that practices the art of ceremonial musick, delving deep into their communal unconscious to write songs about ancient legends, fantasy worlds and distant planets.” Indeed. Weird stuff that reminds me of trippy collective bands like Goat, Prince Rama. Epic composition quality also smacks of soundtracks like Jesus Christ Superstar, Hair. Dramatic vocals vocals abound and proggy musical sentiments. Great stuff. “They rarely perform live due to the various members’ agoraphobia, superstitiousness, and severe anxiety”. KZSU material.

More: “The Planet of Progkp is the fourth album by REPTIEL and the second of a multi-part series of psychedelic sci-fi/fantasy rock albums the band is composing.”

1) (1:56) atmospheric psych noise drone with organs and tripped out vocs 2) (3:35) full on retro pop prog, cinematic theater 3) (7:32) space rock with some funkiness, dramatic 7)70’s vocal delivery, 2/3rd way through picks up a Neu, Th Faith Healers driving beat 4) (3:26) Tom Tom peppy psych 5) (4:10) funky slow ballady 6) (4:51) vocal heavy, very tripped out. 7) (5:54) Trippy noodley to start 8)* (4:24) triplet swingy epic soaring ballady 9)* (3:47) 60’s regal psych flavor 10) (2:20) synth tone intro then a basic rock feel, an epic 70’s feel 11) (5:57) more disjunction epic cinematic weirdness 12) (2:08) simple looping afterthought. 13) (4:03) another regal psych piece 14)* (5:33) epic
