Album Review
Your Imaginary Friend

To be precise this sounds very much like the mid 80’s English artist Danielle Dax, but more up to date references would be Bjork, Portishead, MIA, Ofra Hauza: But this is indeed Cibo Mato’s Miho Hatori. Cool electro based foundation for a female centerpiece vocalist. Lush synth instrumentation, downtempo and minimal, collage’like in most places, but totally accessible if not downright slick and commercial sounding tracks exist with her unmistakable Japanese accented vocals. “The record features Greg Fox (Liturgy, Zs) and “Viva Madrid!, (track 7)… made with the core group of Ryan Olson, Ben Ivascu and Isaac Gale. Greg Fox also guests here, as do drummers Chris Egan (Blood Orange, !!!) and Freddy Votel (Cows), and ambient artist Eric Timothy Carlson.”

1) (1:04) brief idea, thought 2)* (4:42) big middle eastern influenced downtempo 3)* (3:54) off kilter, dissonant mash up of tones 4) (4:32) very minimal synth tones, slowly pile up to build a very atmospheric slow to evolve balm until a bass line and very Bjork vocals enter 5) (2:52) chill and minimal with “sax”, lyrics in simple Portuguese 6) (5:24) very poppy feel, downtempo, atmospheric with near exotica tones 7) (4:03) hip hop flavor starts to appear, seep in, slow heavy beat with simple monotoned beat based phrasing, male rapping appears and she responds 8) (3:04) simple mechanical feel, then spoken pitch changed strange voiceover 9)* (4:02) downtempo simple beat with nice twangy guitar, accessible pleasant singing and very poppy, radio hit oriented 10)* (2:00) nice low drone noise intro, then actual atmospheric noise, brief, an outtro
