Lil Jabba - MiZo
Reviewed by Chano
This mini album is a fun listen that blurs a variety of electronic genres - UK Garage, Dub, jungle, etc. Lil Jabba is associated with the Tek Life crew from Chicago and has made footwork music. This album is different and has great moody/introspective dynamics throughout. Some tracks are more dancey and poppy, while others have intense stops and starts throughout giving them an interesting dynamic.

RIYL: DJ Rashad, Burial, Aphex Twin, Radiohead.

1. “WiCKet” - 4:55 - Lots of wild kick drums and cool samples cutting up the percussion on the first min. Then it all slows down and the bassline comes in super thick with some crashing cymbal samples giving this some interesting texture. Cool samples of glass breaking and bottles getting tapped on, lawn mowers, and other stuff giving this a great vibe. Beat breaks down in interesting ways throughout. Great track.
2. “DisTilleR” - 3:12 - This sounds dubsteppy to me (the hi hats especially) but I’m no expert in this genre. Thick bass synth. Interesting sample of what might be a vacuum cleaner? It works really well - great groove and texture. Nice starts and stops to the kicks gives this one some space to breathe.
3. “Hot Bloc” - 4:37 - More fuzzy thick synth bass kicks this off. Then the bass gets cleaner and funkier to interact with the drums in interesting ways. More snare on this than other tracks. Cool panning of percussion.
4. “WouND” - 3:57 - starts off with fits and starts. Continues on with groove and vocal samples with cool pauses. This one feels sort of slower at times than the other tracks, which is dope. Then it starts off suddenly. Kind of a chaotic vibe.
5. “ForeST EdGe” - 4:26 - dramatic keys build tension in first few seconds and get more complicated as the snare comes in; Rain/water sounding sample in background; Moody synth lead; Things change up around 1:50 and a thick fuzzed out synth bass comes in all glitchy and cool. This one also feels very UK Garage-y/dubstep-y; very cool track.
6. “MiZo” - 4:30 - Title track is great. The atmospherics and leads feel more developed on this than on the other ones. Very dancey and coherent. Less start/stop dynamics than the other tracks giving it a sort of poppy vibe. 3min in a weird vocal sample comes in and then the beat breaks down into what feels very house-y. Very fun dance vibes.
7. “MiZo (WiTU Mix)” - 5:58 - Another mix of the title track; feels slower in the beginning; nice claps. At about 1:20 the drums go in fully and there’s a bass and synth lead that feels groovy but also kind of mellow; introspective vibe.
