INDIE ROCK / LO-FI
Self Care is solo home-recordist Ryan Michael Keller, "hidden away in a small northern California coastal town," according to his publicity. The densely layered production is an odd mix of 60s psychedelia, 80s Brit Pop, and angry or alienated lyrics. Interesting as a sonic experience but there's not a "fun" song in the set. I liked the instrumentals most: 6, 11.
No FCC issues.
1 Mid-slow. Very short instrumental intro. (0:40)
2 Mid-slow. Heavy & plodding. Brooding, angry lyric. (3:51)
3 Mid-tempo. Jangly leadin but then a similar mood as before. (2:46)
4 Mid-fast. A bit lighter feel but with sarcastic lyrics. (1:35)
5 * Mid-slow. Compelling song & strong instrumentation. (2:48)
6 * Mid-slow. Intriguing, melancholy instrumental with guitars, bass & drums. (4:02)
7 Very slow. Eerie instrumental interlude. (0:40)
8 * Mid-slow. Low voice floats in ocean of sustained organ chords, driving drums. (3:46)
9 Slow. Leasing guitar arpeggios; ominous, stalking bass. (4:48)
10 Slow. Still in a rotten mood. Plodding, tedious. (3:54)
11 ** Slow. Well crafted instrumental. Sad, like the rest. (2:35)
