Back in 2012, Swearin’ were just an old-fashioned punk rock band, helmed by Allison Crutchfield – the twin sister of Katie Crutchfield a.k.a. Waxahatchee. The sisters have similar vocals, so it may be kind of difficult to decipher who’s who across their vast discography. The long awaited third album from Philadelphia’s Swearin’ is hit and miss at best. Their angst-filled indie rock has flashes of brilliance, however these all come from Alison Crutchfield. The tracks she takes the lead on are exceptional; lyrically adept she conveys her anger perfectly in these succinct and powerful tracks. Like: Thin Lips, Cloud Nothings, Waxahatchee, Hop Along FCC Clean Play: 3, 4, 6, 11 1.Big Change (3:03) Delicate chill pretty standard Swearin’ music. 2.Dogpile (3:06) Riffy, bass-heavy Pavement-esque college rock. 3.Grow into a Ghost (3:11) Distorted guitars and a good drive. 4.Margaret (2:14) Straight-up Breeders-like indie rock. 5.Stabilize (4:41) Sweet and stressed melodies. 6.Untitled (LA) (3:05) Punchy piece of melodic garage rock. 7.Treading (2:57) enjoyable rock ‘n’ roll complete with groovy drums and tight electric guitar. 8.Oil and Water (3:04) Upbeat loping and woozy. 9.Smoke or Steam (2:57) Reverb-soaked cowpunk-tinged track. 10.Anyway (2:10) Sparse, acoustic plaintive and hushed lullaby. 11.Future Hell (2:46) Vocal twang-y and catchiest guitar-led song | ||
