Album Review
Your Imaginary Friend
Reviewed 2018-11-07
Though recorded in the mid 90’s, recently re-released, this stuff is heavily 60’s 70’s pot and acid damaged, old school guitar centered jamming around themes that include Hendrix/Sabbath type “jazz”, 12 bar blues and other classic motivations. If I had to bet I’d say these guys are from that generation of players, which went on to be called “classic rock”. But heres the deal: Sometimes these jammy classic rock types end up accidentally making kick ass psych infused noise low fi rock that fits right in with the likes of Carlton Melton (and conversely, quite often young psych trendy noise rockers accidentally sound like hippie jamsters). These guys reveal they are the former with an obligatory reggae jam and over one Hendrix/Santana nod. Regardless, this most definitely has its “far out, man” moments.

1)* (12:45) caution 5 seconds dead air intro, then a full on jam w guitar freaking out, goes through moods but overall cool jams even with a silly 12 bar blues progression 2) (2:44) heavily chorused bass and wahed guitar, subtle drums 3) (6:21) swingy Stoney jam. 4) (6:49) obligatory reggae jam. I guess these guys are hippies. 5) (4:16) jazzy take on hendrix’s Jazzy classic 6) (4:51) mathy proggy rhythm and feel turns spacey and psych. 7) (6:50) triplet jazzy rock minor keyed cool 8)* (2:21) I love it, this is when we would feel free to really have fun with our echoplexes and old school phase shifters: a psych noise interlude 9) (4:36) acoustic low fi percussion jam with one of those brasillian boingy boing things 10) (8:45) total 60’s San Francisco garage santana latin psych worship 11) (1:31) playing around with some drum machines and old synths, just “noise” 12) (4:08) cover of Tito Puente’s song that Santana turned into a gigantic hit: Oye Como Va 13) (5:05) cover of Hendrix’s most bad ass song: Voodoo Chile – I’d love to hear a cover of this done balls out, ear bleeding, slammed against the back wall searing – this is not that, just play the Woodstock version instead
