Self Defense Family – Have You Considered Punk Music? RIYL: shame, The War On Drugs, Ceremony (The L-Shaped Man) Favorite tracks: 4, 10 FCC: 1 Not exactly punk record, for anyone confused. “Have You Considered Punk Music” features an atmospheric, hollowed-out, lethargic form of rock. The band’s organization, featuring a rotating group of musicians, is audible: little flourishes of piano, trumpet, and synths add character to this melancholy mosaic. 1. (FCC: shit) The Supremacy of Pure Artistic Feeling (4:28) – slow, sparse 2. Certainty of Paradise (2:29) – sharp chords build to a slow burn, then fade out 3. No Analog Nor Precedent (4:04) – melodic piano flourishes, echo-y vocals *4. Watcher at the Well (4:20) – lo-fi piano intro, dark post-punky synth 5. Nobody Who Matters Cares (4:32) – sing-songy repetition of title 6. Have You Considered Punk Music (4:42) – piano line wonders in and out of melody 7. Have You Considered Anything Else (4:22) – wavy synth, multiple breaks for layered, fuzzed-out spoken word 8. Raw Contempt (3:36) – slight twang sprinkled throughout 9. Slavish Devotion to Form (2:58) – stripped back to bare synths and light chimes *10. The Right Kind of Adult (4:03) – Far away drum beat, a synthesized ukulele? Eclectic and bittersweet |
