Album Review

Reviewed 2019-01-20
Atmospheric indie rock with heavy 90’s sensibilities. Shoegaze washes, spiky grunge, and expansive, lush, post-rock instrumental arrangements. The first release in 14 years from Scottish rockers Pilotcan, who formerly released singles on Mogwai’s label Rock Action Records. The entirety of the album was recorded in Austin, TX (the title is an allusion to the bats that live under the Congress Avenue Bridge) which could explain some of the Americana influences peppered throughout the album. For fans of Sebadoh, Mogwai, and Dinosaur Jr. All tracks are FCC Clean. Try 6, 3, 4, 9, 10

1. (5:20) Slow-building post-rock instrumental. Strummy guitar with interesting piano flourishes
2. (3:45) Slide guitar, a touch of country
*3. (3:41) Loud and grungy with ringing guitars and crashing drums
*4. (4:07) Quick drum intro leads into a ferocious but well-arranged rocker
5. (4:48) Slow with cello and piano accents
*6. (2:54) Upbeat with layered male/female vocals. Poppy and melodic, but with a rugged grunge foundation and a 20 second guitar reverb outro
7. (3:48) Desolate, rusty instrumental with slide guitar and short swirls of distortion. At the halfway point, a low-fi spoken word track (voicemail?) about popping pills on a druggy evening slowly fades in.
8. (3:22) Midtempo shoegazey rock with yearning lyrics.
*9. (3:06) Simple driving drums and a dense, full dense sound. Lots of guitar washes, layered male/female vocals and piano accents
*10. (7:45) Beautiful post rock instrumental. Smooth cello, slow-building piano and guitar, Explosions in the Sky vibes, etc. Crescendos into a chaotic apex and then gently shimmers away. Watch out though—the last 20 seconds are silence
11. (5:35) As if the previous song wasn’t a suitable outro, we have another lush and strummy post rock instrumental. This one is more gentle and tranquil than track 10. The combined dulcimer, acoustic guitar and cello give it an interesting, almost baroque, feel
