Polish-Canadian pianist Katarzyna Musial offers a deliciously diverse program of early 20th century piano works. Compositions by 9 composers evoke the dances of Argentina, Andalusia, France, Cuba, Catalonia, Quebec, the US, and the pianist’s native Poland. Musial has performed in the US, Canada, and widely abroad, and been a guest on numerous radio and TV broadcasts. Ginestera’s 3 Argentinian dances tell the stories of an old cattleman, a beautiful young girl, and a wild young herdsman. The 1st of Turina’s 5 Andalusian dances hints at bare feet stamping, the 2nd at amore, and the last 3 at ritual gatherings and festivals. Messiaen’s 2 Preludes evoke the calm of the dove and the intensity of the wind. Lecuona’s La Comparsa depicts a carnival procession; his fiery Malagueña is well-known. Mathieu’s Prelude blends Romantic and Impressionist styles. Stojowski’s Mazurkas blend Chopin waltz styles with Spanish rhythms. Gershwin’s Three Preludes were influenced by blues and jazz. Górecki’s Preludes blend folk rhythms with singing melodies and wide dynamic contrasts. Mompou’s works echo Spanish themes from his youth, and Cuban, Brazilian, and Argentinian folk music. Finally, Ginestera’s Suite displays a wide range of melodies and rhythms from South American, African, and European influences. |
