Pine notes, “. . . the Caprices are generally viewed as a pyrotechnical tour-de-force that samples virtually all of the most challenging techniques possible on the violin . . . (but) express Paganini’s inherent musicality . . . (and) reveals a depth of musical integrity and substance”. Paganini (1782-1840) was widely believed to have sold his soul in exchange for his amazing ability. His melodies are beautiful, in keeping with the love of Italian bel canto singing in his day. Pine began studying the Caprices at age 10, and in her 20s performed them all in one concert, an impressive feat. Paganini’s Introduction and Variation captures the aria lyric’s evocation of ‘tease’, ‘bite’, ‘inch’, ‘torment’, and ‘despair’. The Duet for One is intended to sound like a duet for violin and guitar. Caprice d’adieu is charming, elegant, and catchy. Pine composed the Introduction, Theme and Variations in 2000, creating virtuosic themes and variations inspired by Paganini. She performs on a 1742 Guarneri violin.
