Album Review
Your Imaginary Friend
Reviewed 2019-08-06
Solo project of one Josh Pollock, aka DJ Female Convict Scorpion. Guitar based experimental meanderings and layered loops, sounds, samples, all recorded live as part of a soundtrack to a production of The War of the Roses here in SF. The prowess of this guy never ceases to amaze, a master of interesting guitar-work and the ability to layer and dub in a live setting along with samples and other sources. This work takes on the subtlety of say a Tuxedo Moon experiment but at times breaks into some noise or even guitar wankery. Fantastic stuff, all tracks are mostly brief. Pollock has a very long local resume going back 26 years including collaborations with notables White Pee and Emily Jane White, as well as a near-regular on our annual Day of Noise and Weds Night Live programs. Great stuff.

1) (1:34) pensive with synth rhythm yet atmospheric 2) (1:45) dark with slow bass lines be 3) (1:12) rhythmic and cool 4) (1:42) rhythmic with bass string picking, an interesting tone that smacks of a middle eastern wind instrument appears that typifies most remaining tracks 5) (1:36) almost songlike toward end 6) (0:33) brief delay feedback 7)* (2:02) songlike with accessible looped chords 8) (0:29) brief chords 9)* (3:53) dark foreboding, midway dissonant loud chords and metal strumming appears 10) (2:43) quiet twang guitar 11) (1:17) dark industrial 12) (0:51) brief guitar w bursts 13) (0:46) atmospheric but harsh noise appears disturbing 14) (1:40) ambient 15) (1:04) dark ambient 16) (0:58) harsh noise guitar and tones, Van Halen on proper drugs 17) (0:47) quiet guitar 18)* (4:19) out of blue a silly bluesy rag, solo guitar with ambiance, great 19) (1:55) thunderstorm quality. 20) (2:29) pretty atmospheric tone and cinematic 21) (0:42) church organ at first then a boatload of samples of heated voices
