INDIE FOLK-POP / FEMALE SINGER-SONGWRITER The debut album of Bay Area based songwriter, singer, and guitarist Nika Aila States who performs as Red Steppes. States’s voice is a pretty soprano with just a hint of twang. Her intriguing, impressionist lyrics are full of symbols & metaphor: past relationships are described with images of animals, plants, and places. Instruments are acoustic & electric guitar, synth, drums, some electronics. A beautiful website at redsteppes.com has lyrics. No FCC issues 1 * Mid-tempo. Mostly acoustic. Perhaps a message for a former lover. Good start. (4:16) 2 Mid-slow. More electric. A bit spooky. Strange lyrics. (3:59) 3 ** Mid-slow. A recollection of someone important. Melodic with catchy refrain. (4:05) 4 * Mid-tempo. More memories of an ex. Passionate and compelling. Slightly sad. (4:19) 5 * Mid-slow. Again, melancholy remembrances, good singing and accompaniment. (3:26) 6 Mid-slow. A memory of her father; then a conversation about art with her lover. (3:35) 7 Fast. Urgent, tense. Something is definitely wrong, but what?. (2:59) 8 Mid-slow. Somewhat nihilistic. Refers to the California ghost town of Bodie. (4:39) 9 Mid-slow, somber. She’s leaving someone. Scenes of the NorCal coast. (3:46) 10 ** Mid-tempo. Somewhat like a Celtic folk-song with nice finger-style guitar. (3:57) 11 Slow. Sad and spare. A downer of a song, though well sung. (3:17) |
