HYPRK Reviewed 2019-11-04 | ||
The fourth full-length release from American electronic project Telefon Tel Aviv, and the first since the unfortunate passing of founding member (and one half of the original duo) Charles Cooper. In the decade since, remaining member Joshua Eustis has performed as part of the live lineup of Nine Inch Nails and produced work for his own projects Sons of Magdalene and Second Woman. In recent years, he’s gradually returned to creating new creative work for Telefon Tel Aviv, and this latest effort reads like a musical Rorschach test exploring sensory perception, recurring childhood dreams, and submerged feelings of isolation. Milky muted ambient splashes with resonating electronic elements and dramatic minimalist/maximalist swells. For fans of Apparat, Nosaj Thing, Clark, Aphex Twin’s ambient-leaning catalog etc. All tracks FCC clean. Try 3, 1, 9, 2 (*1.) (4:48) Lustrous, shimmering yo-yoing electronic beat slowly unwinding. Soft, slow outro (*2.) (5:15) Undulating hammering beat with stratosphere-high creamy synth washes and echoed, distorted vocals (*3.) (5:36) Heavy crackling beat with epic resonating vocals. Beautiful and moody futuristic slow-dance prom banger (4.) (7:43) Crunchy drumbeat, settles into an interstellar groove (5.) (4:57) Swelling long-form ambient piece (6.) (6:57) Dawnbreak drifting minimal ambient (7.) (6:16) Fluttering chopped synth and lush vocal beds (8.) (4:50) Hard-hitting pulsing industrial beat (*9.) (3:30) Haunting experimental ambient piece. Ringing tones and slow rhythms groaning in sockets |
