Musica Callada, words taken from the poetry of a Spanish mystic poet (St. John of the Cross) of the 1500s, who worked with St. Teresa of Avila to reform the Spanish Catholic Church, is usually translated as “Silent Music” or “Quiet Music.” The liner notes state that this is music of contemplation, mostly slow and introspective, with occasional clangorous outbursts. The recurrent bell sounds reflect Mompou’s having grown up within earshot of his father’s bell factory. A lilt of Catalan folk music in snatches of melody is frequently heard. Dissonance, however, is ever present.

Book One (1959). I. Angelico (2:29). Plaintiff
II. Lent (1:55). Mildly dissonant throughout.
III. Placide (1:40). Lively, quick melody, mild dissonance
IV. Afflitto e penoso (2:43). Sad
V. Legato metallico (2:18). Questioning
VI. Lento molto cantabile (2:28). Reflective, more dissonant
VII, Lento profound (3:41). Bass melody opens a castle song.
VIII. Semplice (0.31). High treble calls.
IX. Lento (2:35). Mid-range bells, quiet, then clangorous,
move to soprano tones
Book Two (1962). X Lento-cantabile (1:44). Fourths pervade.
XI. Allegretto (1:26). By turns a bit joyous, then stern
XII. Lento (2:38). Harsh even in the quiet middle
XIII. Tranquilo – très calme (2:11). Midnight, looking out a monastery
window, seeing violence below.
XIV. Severo – sérieux (1:58). Assertive
XV. Lento – plaintif (2:30). Plaintiff indeed
XVI. Calme (2:59). Rapid, rippling sounds give way to stasis
Book Three (1966). XVII. Lento (2:56). Tolling treble bells joined
by bass chords
XVIII. Luminoso (2:26). Pebbles dropped into water cause rings, and the water overflows and drips
XIX. Tranquilo (2:45). Mourning
XX. Calme (4:03). Complaining, asking Why?
XXI. Lento (3:07). A cold stone floor and a small daylight window above
Book Four (1974). XXII. Molto lento e tranquilo (2:26). The refectory,
empty, awaiting the monks
XXIII. Calme, avec claré (2:33). Call to 5 AM prayer.
XXIV. Moderato (2:54). A pleasant morning in sunlit garden
XXV. Lento molto (3:02). The Abbott speaks, the monks question
XXVI. Lento (3:47). Quiet afternoon, in the garden again
XXVII Lento molto (3:23). Reflections on the day, at sunset.
XXVIII. Lento (5:07). 10 PM prayers by candle light.
