As a folklorist who studied at Ole Miss and the son of a historian, Fussell has the bonafides to weave traditional ballads and stories into his own compositions producing an exquisite sound that is both timeless and contemporary. The secret to the delivery is the warm, yet spare arrangements that leave the listener both calmed yet forlorn. This feeling derives from the eclectic interplay of acoustic and electric guitars accented by gentle French horns and held together with his soothing bass vocals. While primarily a folk sound, this disk would fit well in any 'roots' oriented show.
RIYL: John Fahey, JJ Cale, Jorma Kaukonen, Richard Thompson
Love Farewell - Story of lovers separated by war, loosely based on a traditional Irish folk song, with tearful slide work and Bonnie Prince Billy on backing vocals (slow, 3:59)**
Carriebell - drop dead beautiful, horns & staccato electric guitar around lovely vocals (slow, 3:50)***
Breast of Grass - exquisite, simply picked guitar dances around his lovely vocals with band & french horn joining later (med, 4:02)***
Frolic - instrumental, multiple guitars, slide & horns all gently playing around each other (med, 3:11)
Rolling Mills Are Burning Down - spare & gentle with guitar/piano intro & dreamy vocals (slow, 5:19)*
What Did the Hen Say to the Drake? - instrumental, catchy intro with guitars, light fiddle & bass (med, 3:02)**
The Golden Willow Tree - Based on The Golden Willow Tree and English sea shanty dating to 1635 about the scuttling of a ship. Fairly long, but guitar, fiddle, effects and the story captivate until the last note. (med, 9:11)***
In Florida - instrumental, delightful interplay between electric guitar, bass & horns (med, 3:09)**
Washington - mostly instrumental, homage to 1st president (med, 3:38)
