Julius Hemphill's compositions really don't sound like anyone else's -- very distinctive, muscular, sinuous, often bluesy and/or dissonant. Great ensemble writing, really nice use of space. Sometimes driving, sometimes quieter and lovely.

This sax sextet is great! A hard, dry sound, very tight playing, lots of excellent solos, wonderful group improv. Inside/outside stuff. Great dynamics too.

**1 - Bouncy, complicated rhythms -- abstract -- then sounding like an old big-band sax section. Nice tenor solo.

2* - Dissonant, soaring head, then everyone warbling and squealing together.

3* - Excellent Tim Berne solo intro, then bluesy tenor solo with quiet, lush background.

4* - Dissonant, singsong-chimey group intro, then pretty furious group improv.

5* - Minor, keening solos over eerie floating/rumbling background.

6 - Bouncy, swinging, bluesy

8* - Excellent, delicate, floating ... then heavier, richer group sound

9 - Bluesy. Starts like a spiritual, then gets, um, "dirtier."

Very highly recommended.
