Do Make Say Think are a Constellation Records post-rock outfit with members of Godspeed You Black Emperor! While they share GYBE!'s formula of slow crescendo to cathartic release, they have their own original sound. Elements of jazz puts their sound closer to Chicago post rockers, though track 6 starts to sound more like trip hop. Most tracks hinge on a simple minor key theme that is built up to explosive conclusion. The musicianship is great, and no less than a sax, trumpet, flute, electric guitar, sexy fretless bass, and drums can be heard on this disc. Recorded in a barn, which works well for this moody, cinematic album...with good speakers the quiet chirp of crickets can be heard in the background, and you can almost feel the cool winter air. All I can say is this is my unchallenged fav of 2000. -nari

*1 > WHEN DAY CHOKES THE NIGHT
Starts off as a quiet, creeping drone with subtle atmospheric effects (turn the levels up). Lonely, echoing guitar notes soon give way to a frenzied climax with busy drums and blaring saxophones.

*2 > MINMIN
Pretty opening chord gradually develops into a swirling climax of catchy drums, electronic ambience, and a bittersweet pop melody. You must love the fretless bass.

*3 > THE LANDLORD IS DEAD
Introduced by a swinging beat, brushed drums, and a haunting duet for muted trumpet (sax?). Explodes into an anguished climax with huge symbal splashes and agitated guitar screams.

*4 > THE APARTMENT SONG
Slow, bone-chilling groove for two reverb-drenched guitars. Jazzy, mellow.

5 > ALL OF THIS IS TRUE
This rambling groove stays very chill. Features a syncopated trumpet/sax duet, and a crescendo of fuzzy ambient distortion.

6 > BRUCE E KINESIS
"Dub", "drum n bass", and "downtempo" all come to mind. Slow groove; heavy beats with a big kick.

*7 > GOODBYE ENEMY AIRSHIP
Twelve minute ambient epic with a techno-like build up and break. Propulsive beats with huge washes of echoing, wavering ambient effects and a maddeningly beautiful melody.
