Circus Contraption 08/29/01
Avante “circus” music, eastern European dark waltzes and 2/4 silliness w/ gravelly voices often thru bullhorn; tubas, accordian, piano, violin, other madness, some jazzy. Tom Waits. Funny how he is forever associated w/ this traditional form of ethnic music. Cant deny the similarities here especially when its obvious that very western (Seattle) artist types like him are interpreting it.
1) full on dark ¾ plodding circus w/ bullhorn, screams, jeers, minor key’ed big tent opening act
2) upbeat 2/4 clowns chasing eachother
3) upbeat swingy feel, more loungy w/ bullhorn vocs shifts to slower triplet rhythm and 2/4
4) tango rhumba sleazy w/ klezmerish clarinet and pretty violin and fem duet vocs
5) slow waltz, dark lyrics
6) pretty burlesque jazz w/ clarinet, banjo, bass, brushed drums and sexy fem vocs
7) very Tom Waits w/ accordian, dark, midway voiceover
8) slow intro, upbeat percussion echoey, lush
9) player piano upbeat bar-room, shifts ¾ w/ bullhorn vocs
10) interesting title, lyrics: slow jazzy brushed drums w/ sizzle cymbal, sexy girl vocs, little quick bursts of silliness here and there
11) marchlike Irish ditty
12) Franks Wild Years Waits rhythm, feel
13) slow dark dissonant accordian, desperate vocs, builds, analog synth, toy sounds
14) silly 2/4 circus w/ great lyrics 15) slow lo-fi waltz played on bottles (?)
