LOS FAKIRES – Los Fakires Deutsche Grammophon, 2002 CUBA – Deutsche Grammophon?! The label is the first clue that this isn’t just another collection of tired old Cuban musicians riding those long Buena Vista coattails. The Fakires reorganized as a quintet after their big band fell apart (in the ‘80s, I think). They continue in the “Santa Clara” style, playing relaxed, acoustic sons and boleros full of class and vitality. They have an odd lineup – alto saxophone, guitar, bongo, and percussion – that makes them sound like an exceptionally talented pick-up band playing on some street corner. Adding to the balance, they have two singers – one rough, the other smooth. This is a very good disc that’s sure to lift your mood. Easily recommended to all Cuban music fans. Fo’s picks: 2, 7, 9, 11, 12, 14 01. 4:08 – lazy, catchy tune; very smooth 02. 4:12 – coy fun with cute sax, big vox 03. 5:08 – upbeat anti-drinking song 04. 5:07 – touching ballad, nice vocal 05. 4:42 – some upbeat Caribbean fluff 06. 3:42 – cute old children’s song 07. 3:20 – ballad, very fine duet vox 08. 3:50 – smile-inducing dance number. 09. 5:04 – classy version of well-worn classic 10. 5:45 – cha-cha rhythm, a bit silly 11. 4:33 – compelling son, good riffs & vocals 12. 5:00 – lively descarga, lots of sax space 13. 3:51 – flowing and swaying guaracha-son 14. 5:29 – sophisticated, catchy, with piano [Fo] - 8/7/02 | ||
