Album Review

Hip-Hop, Funk, Jazz, and Breakbeats from 7" Singles. This collection contains a side from most of the first several 45s put out by Peanut Butter Wolf's Stones Throw label. As Wolf says in the liner notes, the 7" series was sort of a hobby of the label, so the tracks on here are a bit a departure from the straight up hip-hop you would expect from Stones Throw. Here you see them branching out beyond, particularly into the ultra-rare funk dug up by Egon. I recommend just about everything on here and I encourage everyone, not just hip-hop kids to explore this record.
1) Break. Short, sparse
2) Hip-Hop. 1999 Quasimoto hit remixed, choppy scratched vocals FCC some partially inaudible shits and a fuck
3) Soul. Slow, lounge-y piano and goofy lyrics, over some bleepy electronic sounds
4) *Bluesy funk. Male vocals over
5) Jazzy interlude, Mizel Brothers break covered by YNQ
6) Jazzy Stevie Wonder Cover
7) Hip-hop/Disco ode to the Atari 2600 game console. FCC shit/fuck
8) Another brief break interlude, leads into…
9) Hip-hop over driving beat with a dark piano loop in the hook FCC shit
10) *Spaced out children's music freakout. The one Stark Reality album is a $500 record. I think that the price is due to rarity, desirability as a source for drum samples, and the fact that Stark Reality Discovers Hoagy Carmichael's Music Shop is one of the weirdest, most drugged out psychedelic children's records ever made. Another controversial Stone's Throw reissue.
11) Hip-hop
12) *Funk. Great funk instrumental
13) *Instrumental part 2 of Breakestra's funk Jam
14) *Up-tempo hip hop, over a short but nicely complicated loop
15) *Nice up-tempo break track featuring bass
16) Turntablism, builds nicely FCC fuck
17) Up-tempo rare-groove funk with male/female vocal duet
18) Lo-Fi Family Stone imitation
19) Mellow orchestral loop
20) Snippet from cover of Ronnie Foster track sampled by Tribe Called Quest
21) Jazzy cover of Grover Washington Jr.
22) Mellow hip-hop spelling lesson.
