Politically/socially conscious folk rocker. Mature. Two disc set from Michelle Shocked, I haven't kept up with her since "Texas Campfire Tapes" so I can't compare with her recent work. 2nd disc are mostly instrumental mixes of tracks from the 1st.
Disc 1 "deep natural"
1. 20 second vocal track- might as well let it go directly into track 2
2.mid-fast environmentally conscious song, beat w/heavily reverbed horns reminds me of Beth Custer's 80 Mile Beach and Spaceheads.
3.acoustic guitar intro, then pedal/slide guitar. Lush
4.rock, minor key
5.weeper, starts w/mostly quiet singing and then gets less weepy
6.easy jazzy, upbeat
7.bouncy beat, almost reggae
8.mellower, subdued beat, slide guitars and electric piano.
9.dub beat
10.rock. nice sung/yelled part near end
11.nice acoustic number, quieter
12.melodic, catchy, mid-slow, easygoing
13.bluesy, organ & horns with the electric guitar
14.rock, borrowing a little gospel for this Godsong. quiet part in middle.
15.pretty lullabye, echoey guitar
disc 2 "dub natural" instrumentals
1.see #15 disc 1, much shorter. less lullaby, more muzak without the vocals
2.see #8. pretty desert soundtrack music.
3.reggae, snippets of dub vocals, producer had fun with this one.
4.one minute of fooling around, a practice tape.
5.see #13. vocals. slow rock with some bluesy organ
6.a little like Bob Marley instrumental.
7.echo and clear guitar, some drums and slide guitar later, nearly a lullaby
