DQE is an underknown, great (if quirky) rock band. The lead, Grace Braun, is much like Jad Fair or Daniel Johnston (but a decade younger): strong DIY ethos with clear personal expression in the songs. It's the same players on both the discs- the Grace Braun is a little more on folk/country/bluegrass and the DQE is more punk. Music is a rock trio recorded live to 2-track in the studio, some self-harmonizing added later. Vox are earnest though often "off" (just adds to the charm if you ask me). This is about their 6th album, not counting their cassettes. From around Atlanta. An aside- I'm sometimes confused as to which voice the song's story is told with- similar to some Magnetic Fields. Indy-rock depression, just voice & piano. Nick Drake cover. +10.Dulcimer & marching drums. Leaving song. +11.Great midtempo easygoing pickup song. 12.Folk. Rare- a male voice harmonizes. 13.Catchy singalong river song. Reprises "Jenny Wren" from a previous album. +14.Very pretty, acoustic guitar & voice only. Sad- about a child's death - but not at all woeful. 15.spoons? quiet bass, acoustic guitar. Sounds like a judgement song. 16. Slow stripped alt-country you're-the-one-for-me song.Nick Drake cover 17.mid-slow, we're fishies in a pond, sweet 18. The famous Frost poem set to music 19.A-capella, solo and mournful, sounding 100% Appalachian (A.P. Carter) DQE disc- queerly fits w/some 90s queercore +1.fast, exhortation to continue rocking +2.
