The Graves Brothers Deluxe "Gonna Happen To You" - Some local kids made up of Thin White Rope bass player (originally from New Orleans) and currently 2 others (they've apparently had several members). Each song usually has drums, bass, guitars, and saxophone. Vocals are deep and often slightly distorted. The overall sound is hard to describe. At times it's jazzy, other times it sounds like rock, and then they also like to get noisy and arty. It works really well. This is their 2nd full-length album and it's quite nice. Generally a dark brooding and moody tone. Almost every song is good.
My Picks: 1, 5, 10
Katie P. 12/2/02

1) Starts with static and electrical sounds. Cool bass line and droning sax. Vocals slightly distorted (like talking over a phone). Smokey, slow, and moody feeling.
2) Starts with drums. Tough vocals and guitar. Solid midtempo with some nice horns. Ends abruptly.
3) A bit more playful in mood. Uptempo with bouncy rockin' guitars.
4) Acoustic guitar starts it out. Deep intimate vocals. There's also some scraping noises.
5) Saxophone craziness begins it. Then it eventually turns into a swinging jazz tune. Weird lyrics, but pretty cool.
6) Groovy bass line and droning guitars. Fast midtempo. Generally a moody piece.
7) Starts with simple clean guitar and smokey saxophone. Laid back and kind of sexy. Instrumental.
8) Midtempo with saxophone and guitars. Has a bit more of a rock sound than jazz, but it's also quite arty and almost orchestral.
9) Heavy bass line. Uptempo with tough guitars and lyrics about hating someone.
10) Metal guitars and then some acoustic guitars. Weird angular hits with the guitar and saxophone. Gruff vocals. This is cool.
11) Uptempo with rockin' guitars. Heavy guitars at times.
12) A really low hum fades in and out for about a minute. Then some saxophone briefly, more hum, and that's it.
