Sub-Saharan music in a North African setting. Catchy, call-and-response songs. Most have piano, which does not really seem to fit, but sometimes gives the tunes a lot of texture and provides good bridge between phrases. The group seems to have been trying to update traditional music to more modern (and Western) sensibilities.
*1 – Call-and-response male vocals, bass (or something similar), flute, violin
*2 – Fast percussion, mandolin, prominent gypsy-style violin, call-and-response male vocals, piano backup
3 – Odd mixture of percussion and new age piano, violin; a soothing (if odd) piece
4 – Mandolin, call-and-respones vocals in Arabic, understated sax
*5 – Mid-tempo percussion, cool male vocals (some call-and-response), saxophone, more African than Mid Eastern feel
6 – Mid-tempo, doodling percussion, guitar-like instrument, inexplicable piano, group male vocals; a meandering jam-session piece
7 – Fast beat, bass, mandolin, understated piano, nice male vocals (group and solo)
*8 – Fast beat, ethereal, soaring male vocals (cool), midi percussion (works here)
9 – Traditional male vocals, bass-like instrument,
