Album Review
Your Imaginary Friend
Reviewed 2002-12-10
This is the most important cd in the a-file right now: masterful historical account of conflict in Iraq/Persian Gulf concentrating on Gulf War I and its aftermath, use of economic sanctions as a weapon of mass destruction. Hundreds of amazing soundbites and quotes from news/tv/media were collaged as well as narration. Soundbeds are quality electronica ranging from ambient/new agey space of Michael Stearns to kick-ass noisy jungle by Aphex Twin, as well as work by Orbital. CD2 features soundbeds only with a few twists; they stand by themselves too. I urge all djs to play this cd at least once. Its important. Bill C.

CD1:

1) history of bagdhad, Mesopotamia, 20th century Iraq, over ambient new agey space music
2) more recent history: oil control, same sort of soundbed, iran-iraq war
3) post iran-iraq politics, beginning of Gulf War I, music turns blippy-beat electronic, mid tempo
4) soundbed turns middle eastern/Indian mid-up tempo, good; post Kuwait invasion pre allied attack, propaganda and allied lies, King George I quotes
5) classic Kuwait baby incubator propaganda story to congress, manipulation of US public, Bush lies, soundbed still upbeat electronica
6) US/Allied bombing begins, driving electronic beats
7) war-time misinformation- Bill Hicks (!) “the republicans made this shit up about there being guards out there” minimal beat electronic
8) iraqi bomb shelter civilian massacre atrocity- horrific quotes, wailing, creepy soundbed, this will give you nightmares and disgust you, truly horrible
9) aphex twin ups the music ante: driving noisy jungle feel, more media quotes about the lopsidedness of the “war” (read: massacre)
10) ambient soundbed, voiceover military stats of war, starts off sounding like a general but ends up sounding like a protester, bill hicks “slaughter”
11) post war carnage and chaos, ambient bed
12) sanctions as a weapon of mass destruction; iraqi child “I wish I had been born a dog in America”
13) Desert Fox, more bombing, sanctions, ambient

CD2: soundbeds to CD1, with a few interesting variations, check the titles
