Album Review
Your Imaginary Friend

As anyone who was lucky to catch KFJC’s April’s fools special 2002 can attest, there is no shortage of sappy heartfelt musical tributes to 9-11. They range from sugary to (unintentionally) hilarious to angry. What we have here is tribute-like, but unlike the rest this one has some substance, social commentary Recorded locally, solo by Michael Mullen with the help of Pigs Head studio/American Music Club associate Tim Mooney, this contains three tracks. Tracks 1 and 3 are kinda weak, but on closer listen you realize that 3 is actually quite nice, a slow simple acous guit+vocs ballad w/ slight synth and excellent lyrics (“confusing war with the company picnic”). The artist himself (in enclosed correspondance) suggests the option of talking over or fading the songs after 4:30, which is actually a rare example of self-awareness that I wish more artists possessed. But really the only reason this cd is on the a-file is track 2: a voice-over with simple pianos and synth sounds. The voice text is great: e.g. “if Madonna isn’t watching TV, why are you?”. Play this track.
