The Dudley Corporation, “The Lonely World of the Dudley Corporation”
Basic sound is guy, guitar, percussion. Songs are all pretty short . . . They sound lonely indeed, and kind of whiny, if I may say so. Vocals are kind of quiet; slip often into falsetto. Major points for featuring accordion, banjo, and musical saw—on the same song.
1. Score—voices, pretty steady guitar strumming beat
2. One in a Squillion—fast even tempo, steady drums and strumming, high vocals
3. Divil the Bit—slower, muted guitars, quieter vocals under doubletime guitar; hushed parts alternate with abrupt loud yelling
4. Stutter—changes meter a lot; has lots of pauses; slidy guitar
5. Stupid—slow, quiet single guitar and one voice; slidy guitar, laid-back percussion; guitar gets faster and more insistent; voice stays quiet but another one enters.
6. She Falls—slow, quiet guitar, single chords, quiet voice; percussion enters; builds to false climaxes.
7. A Song Against the City—starts with tinny “old recording” guitar; goes into fast steady loud tempo.
8. The Small Hours—starts right in with vocals with the guitar. Comfortable midtempo, with some pauses.
* 9. Quick—Slow, with leisurely chords. Whispery vocals. Cello throughout, and later accordion adds, and harmonica, when a steady beat comes in.
10. Slowed in Motion—Uptempo; has superfast section at end.
11. R.K.P.—guitar, with a shaker beat, laid-back tempo, quieter song. Vocal harmonies in spots.
12. God Only Knows—Uptempo and steady. He sounds like he’s singing off key. Builds toward end.
* 13. HED—vocals start right away, with quiet guitar, has a waltz feel. Accordion comes back, musical saw enters, and then banjo. —“I’ve had my heart ripped out . . . again . . .” Repeats for like a minute at the end. Over slow drum beat and synth organ song; harmony enters until fade.
14. The Out Song –waltz feel in the drums. Low-energy steady midtempo. Vocal harmonies. Middle section with loud percussion and wailing guitars over voices singing in chorus; goes back to quiet
