Jon Langford, frontman for the Mekons is joined on this country/garage/folk effort by the one and only Sadies. Jon Langford while he does not possess a great voice brings to this project a real earthiness and folky authenticity. The ever-dextrous Sadies prove to be masters of surf, folk, country, and Nuggetsy garage rock. This is a very solid album of short pop songs expressing Langford's alienation. Even if this album is not your style, do check out song 10 which features vocals by Sally Timms. Stand-out tracks: 10,1,4,6,8,11,12 1. Organ-driven with acoustic instruments. Glorious '60's feel. 2. Sad, philosophical folk song with pedal steel. Story of our lives. 3. Raucous garage-rock track. It's good to hear the Sadies rock out again. 4. Spooky cowboy surf that the Sadies do best. 5. Protest of American war-making. Wish I had reviewed this album earlier. Save until needed. 6. Gentle folky country song, a great Langford lyric (if you like this dig up the fantastic Jon Langford/Sally Timms album, _Precious Jewel:SOFH&HV_ in country). 7. Driving '50's-flavored rocker. 8. Sad, country title-track. 9. More rocking, country-flavored tune. 10. Brooding psychedelic track with vocals by Mekon Sally Timms. Great weird drum fills. Play! 11. Immediate, rocking tune. A great take on Bakersfield country! 12. Goofy, slow spaghetti westerrn tune. |
