JOE TURNER - "The Midnight Special"
Pablo, 1976 / 2002

Ooo-wee! Big Joe Turner still had it in 1976, at the age of 65. The top blues shouter of his day, Turner was a BIG man with a BIG voice. He doesn’t show his age here at all, but it's an unusual set. There are a few straight blues numbers, but most of the tunes are jazzy popular standards! In any case, Turner sounds great and the 9-piece band is having fun. Check it out and smile.

Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 6, 8, 13

1. long, loose blues jam, great band
2. quick jazzy fluff, low key swing
3. slow-dance, good vibe: has a live feel
4. cheesy lounge, but kind of nice
5. midtempo, good-time hokum
6. cute, swingin' band, 20's pop song
7. smooth lounge-y ballad, good voice
8. mild electric blues, band is loose
9. alternate take of #2
10. alternate take of #5
11. alternate take of #4
12. alternate take of #6
13. another long informal jam: great!
