Album Review

Beautiful looping loping rockage, heavy and noisy and guitarish without being metal – just thick and warm and hypnotic. Think about Circle, Faust, OOIOO, Last of the Juanitas, Oxbow, Godspeed! You Black Emperor and even the Pain Teens. (Discography of Aquarius-Records-darling NYC band whose entire output has been sold out since about five minutes after they pressed it, and whose flag, like all the hippest bands, got waved mostly after they broke up. Now, thanks to No Quarter, everybody can have some LB in their life – exclusionist hipsters will just have to plant their flags somewhere else, fortunately.)

CD 1
1. loping loop > minimal interlude > driving loop > skree and crazy drumming
2. distorto drum pounding kinda like the Pain Teens
3. clacka chugga skree like a steam train hurtling through the midnight > haunted house interlude > spare jazzy counting fun builds to total cacophony
4. quiet hisses > space jazz w/sax squeals
5. layered toad vox > driving bassy cymbal fun w/sax noodles. Fades, returns.
6. starts 5-10 seconds late, into what sounds like tr. 1 backwards, or kind of a funereal Scottish version thereof (I know that’s a sax but it sure sounds like bagpipes). Quite nice. Some sotto voce murmurings later, and the whole thing fades out w/18:30 remaining and then comes back at about 14:15 with more of the same

CD 2
1. spacier and more OOIOO-like – clattery and cheerful
2. just some interesting passing noises
3. burbly bass and drifting
4. buzzsaw guitar and clashing cymbal
5. intriguing drumline fades immediately, replaced by sweet drone. Drums come back eventually and everything gets a bit too cheesy jazz for me.
6. burbles and squeaks
7. plodding and buzzing with lovely guitar, noise interludes
8. hand percussion and quasi-animal noises, pretty strums
9. stuttery and clattery, twice fades to almost gone but never entirely leaves. First time it comes back much more saxy, second time with ghosty noises.
10. quiet drones of all sorts, gradually gets drummy, fades w/~20 sec. remaining
