This is a compilation of tracks from acts on the Shut Eye Records label. The label is trying to position itself on the border between college radio and mainstream alternative rock radio. It shows. Stick to the first 10 tracks or so. To be honest though, most of this sounds like the shit that appears on the Billboard “College” Charts or on CMJ. Proceed with caution. There are a couple of worthwhile tracks and a truckload of boring shit too.
Pianos, guitars, rumbling feel to it. Whispered vocals at points. Melodic. Promo sheet describes it as “Pulp-like,” which isn’t far off.
Stuttery electric guitar and piano with dreamy, catchy vocals.
Atmospheric feel with industrial beats and bass pulses. Harpsichord sound in the background.
Noisy guitar, synth pulses and fast drum track. Verges on industrial/techno.
Fuzzy, catchy indie rock.
Commercial-sounding country-ish rock, but the vocals have a very slight Jeff Tweedy feel.
Mysterious guitar, smoky vocals.
Faux-goth chick rock.
Fast, deep catchy rumble; very Weezer.
Guitars have an MC5/Stooges feel, but the vocals are more classic. Music to drive fast to.
The music is punk-ish, but the vocals are like some Van Halen shit. Makes a dumb reference to John Holmes’ dick, except they call him John “Hughes.”
Driving drums, fuzzy electric guitar.
Vocals are totally Bowie and the instrumentation is totally Billy Joel.
Straight ahead pop-rock. Commerical feel.
Lazy, distorted guitar and poppy vocals.
Vocals and the music don’t seem to match; vocals have the tempo of a frantic Bowie, but the music is kind of fake blues-rock.
Shitty commercial hard-rock/punk. Papa Roach/Blink 182. Really stupid.
More commercial-sounding stuff. Ominous rock with the whiny voice.
A really really bad Mooney Suzuki. My money says the singer is white, though he’s doing his best deep Hendrix impression. This is blues-rock like that bad band “Blueshammer” in Ghost World replete with classic lyrics such as “I love it when you say my name!” How scandalous!
Straight-ahead commercial pop rock.
Sloppy rock compared to the other selections on this CD. But it does sound very Weezer.
Subdued instrumentation and kind of distorted, whiny vocals.
