This is the second release by the Go-Betweens since their comeback (the first being "Friends of Rachel Worth"). I am a fan of early Go-Betweens (e.g. "Cattle and Cane"), but I am not such a huge fan of the polished pop that reflects their more recent releases. Having said that, this CD is typical of bright, well-crafted Australian pop (e.g. The Lucksmiths), and I am always pleased by intelligent, narrative lyrics over pleasant melodies. If you are looking for a clever, folksy pop or rock tune, look no further.
1-an energetic intro: mid-/up-tempo; acoustic guitars and organ; clear male vocals sing a narrative love song
2,3- mid-tempo pop: acoustic guitars and clear male vocals; some touches of organ and electric guitars
4-slower acoustic ballad; pretty strings join in over time; about a girl's diary
*5*-a classic folk tune: bouncy bass and acoustic guitars accompany a tale of regret and aging; organ and harmonies at choruses
6-more relaxed; strummed guitar, minimal organ and female harmonies at choruses
*7*-up-tempo: a cheerful, summertime toe-tapper; bouncing bass and electric guitar play off layered instruments and harmonies during choruses
*8*- rockin' but sugary sweet: a simple guitar riff drives the song; an undeniably catchy chorus; song gets more complex (pretty guitar solos, additional vocals, and handclaps!)
9-airy and innocuous ballad; acoustic guitars while gentle male vocals describe the need to get away
10-another ballad; piano, acoustic guitar, and sweet/subdued vocals
