FREEDOM OF THE CITY 2002, SMALL GROUPS|
Various free-improv groups recorded live at Emanem Records' annual festival in London. Most of these folks have recorded CDs for Emanem, in the combinations that you see here.
Ranges from musical and adventurous (A1-4) to outright sound/noise experiments (A5-9).
A1-A4 -- Sax/piano duets with an upbeat chamber feel. A2- Starts with smoky jazz, then moves into fiercer improv territory. A3- Fast and skittery. A4- Dark and fast
A5-9 -- Sound explorations with digital-delay effects. A5- Repetitious whispery whine. A6 adds lyrics sung in an airy, unsteady voice.
A7- Crunchier sounds, some violin. A8/9 -- Quiet.
A10-11 -- Trio of sax/trombone/trumpet. Airy untethered stuff.
B1-- Solo acoustic guitar, like avant-folk. Rapid tumblings of notes; tuneful but without much direction
B2-3 -- Trumpet with electronics. B2 is groany and slow, with pockets of intensity. B3 is choppier, ends abruptly.
B4-5 -- Duets of Evan Parker (sax) and acoustic guitar. Guitar has a steely, taut sound, especially on clacky high notes. Parker does his usual marathon flows of notes. B5 has the two playing separately. B6 is a nicely involved piece.
