Sharmistha Sen: Raga Jaijaiwanti
Label: India Archive
According to the CD liner notes, Sharmistha Sen is one of the few instrumentalists in Indian music that has gained prominence. She performs the Raga Jaijawanti. As for all India Archive releases, you can learn a lot more about the music from the CD liner than from my limited review Try: 2,3.
1. A long alap that is free of the tablas. As per convention, it starts slowly and establishes the structure for the raga, and builds towards the end with some complex sitar flourishes. This alap is very long and very sparse, for the most part.
2. Tablas are introduced and now there is some more exploration of the melodic theme of the raga, some more lively sitar improvisation.
3. The dramatic climax of the raga – very sophisticated and complex sitar & tablas flourishes build up towards the end
