RAHMATOLLÁH BADIYI – Sounds of Violin & Kamáncheh
Amity, 2003

A very fine recording of Persian classical music. Badiyi plays both the violin and the kamancheh, another stringed instrument of similar size but with a more Asian flavor. He's solo on half the tracks, otherwise joined by a tunbak (a hand drum). This music evokes the royal courts of ancient Persia. It can be meditative and spacious, hypnotic, or quietly exciting, and Badiyi's playing is marvelous throughout. Great drumming, too. Try it! You'll like it!

NOTE: There are three full pieces (#1-6, 7-10, 11-12), but each track can stand alone.

All tracks are excellent. Fo's Picks: 1, 4, 7, 8,10

1. 2:43 – solo violin: like a muezzin's call
2. 6:37 – violin/drum: medium rhythm
3. 4:10 – solo violin: a slow dialogue
4. 7:15 – violin/drum: fast rhythm
5. 5:12 – solo violin: long & twisty
6. 1:23 – violin/drum: short & happy
7. 3:05 – solo violin: fluid & mysterious
8. 5:40 – violin/drum: mysterious melody
9. 4:19 – solo violin: complex, lots of space
10. 7:40 – violin/drum: quick & rhythmic
11. 3:29 – kamancheh: an ornate moan
12. 4:13 – kamancheh: melody/exploration
